Beautiful beach scene in Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston may be best known for its historic downtown, but some of South Carolina’s best beaches are only a short drive away.

If you’re trying to decide where to spend a beach day, you’ll probably end up choosing between three main options: Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach.

So, which is the nicest beach in Charleston?

For most visitors, we’d give the edge to Sullivan’s Island. It has a wide, beautiful beach, a relatively undeveloped feel, and fewer of the high-rise hotels and tourist attractions you’ll find at some other South Carolina beach destinations.

But “nicest” depends heavily on what you’re looking for. Folly Beach is better if you want a lively beach town and surfing. Isle of Palms is particularly good for families and visitors who want convenient amenities.

Here’s how Charleston’s three main beaches compare.

1. Sullivan’s Island: Best Overall

If your idea of the perfect beach is wide stretches of sand, dunes, historic homes, and a quieter atmosphere, Sullivan’s Island is hard to beat.

Located at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, Sullivan’s Island feels noticeably different from many popular beaches along the South Carolina coast. Development is relatively restrained, and you won’t find beachfront high-rises or a large commercial boardwalk.

That makes the island particularly appealing if you’re looking for a classic Lowcountry beach experience.

Why We Like Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island offers:

The commercial district around Middle Street is small but surprisingly good, making it easy to combine a beach day with lunch or dinner.

The Downsides

The biggest issue is parking. Sullivan’s Island doesn’t have large public beachfront parking lots. Visitors generally park along designated areas beside the island’s streets and walk to one of the public beach stations.

The beach also doesn’t have the same concentration of rentals, shops, and tourist amenities you’ll find at Folly Beach.

But that’s arguably part of its appeal.

Best for: Couples, relaxing beach days, walking, scenery and visitors who want a quieter Lowcountry experience.

2. Isle of Palms: Best for Families

Just northeast of Sullivan’s Island is Isle of Palms, commonly called IOP.

The two islands are connected, but the beach experience is noticeably different.

Isle of Palms has more vacation rentals, hotels and visitor amenities. Around Front Beach, you’ll find restaurants, shops and easy access to the ocean.

That convenience makes IOP one of the easiest Charleston beaches for families.

Why We Like Isle of Palms

IOP offers:

If you’re staying in Charleston for several days and want to rent a beach house, Isle of Palms is also one of the area’s best options.

The Downsides

IOP can get crowded during summer weekends and holidays, particularly around Front Beach.

It’s also more developed than Sullivan’s Island, so visitors looking for a secluded or natural-feeling beach may prefer its neighbor.

Best for: Families, vacation rentals, convenient beach days and visitors who want amenities nearby.

3. Folly Beach: Best Beach Town & Surfing

If Sullivan’s Island is the relaxed option, Folly Beach is Charleston’s beach town.

Located south of downtown on Folly Island, Folly has a completely different personality from Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.

Center Street runs directly toward the ocean and is lined with restaurants, bars, surf shops and small businesses. The surrounding streets are packed with colorful beach houses and vacation rentals.

There’s generally more happening here.

Why We Like Folly Beach

Folly offers:

For surfers, Folly is usually the obvious choice.

The area around The Washout is one of South Carolina’s best-known surf spots and can produce good waves when conditions cooperate.

The Downsides

Traffic onto Folly Island can become significant during busy summer weekends. Parking near the beach can also be challenging.

And if you’re specifically looking for a quiet beach, Folly probably wouldn’t be our first choice.

Best for: Surfing, younger visitors, restaurants, nightlife and anyone who wants a true beach-town experience.

There really isn’t a bad choice. All three beaches are close enough to Charleston that you can easily visit more than one during a trip.

Before you head out, be sure to check the latest surf conditions and live beach cameras to see what the water temperature and beach conditions look like. You can also monitor tropical weather during hurricane season to plan your beach days accordingly.
